Rascal Flatts will kick of their “American Living Unstoppable Tour” tonight in St. Louis, MO. Joe Don Rooney spoke to the St Louis Dispatch newspaper about kicking their new tour off in St. Louis and a few surprises they have in store for the fans.
Guitarist-singer Joe Don Rooney says starting the Rascal Flatts tour again in St. Louis represents something near and dear to the country-pop superstars’ hearts.
“We love St. Louis,” he says. “I grew up in Oklahoma, and my whole life was centered around the four-state area of Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas and Missouri. I used to drive to Six Flags with my family and go to baseball games, so I couldn’t think of a better place to kick off the tour again.”
Earlier this week, rehearsals moved to Verizon Wireless Amphitheater.
“We’re giving our fans a couple of hours of getting away from reality,” Rooney says. “As soon as we drop the first note, we want them to be captivated.”
Fans can expect some “really cool stuff” from the band’s set list, including music featured in the recent “Hannah Montana: The Movie,” Rooney says.
Rascal Flatts, which has had several blockbuster CDs including “Melt,” “Feels Like Today” and “Still Feels Good,” will have to work those “Hannah Montana” songs among the group’s other hits.
“We’ve had 25 singles at this point,” Rooney says. The band’s current release is “Summer Nights” from the CD “Unstoppable.”
“Some singles lend themselves to show songs, and some don’t,” says Rooney, who listed “Life is a Highway” as a show song. “That’s one that gets everyone going. We’ll probably open the show with that.”
Early hit “Praying for Daylight” probably won’t make the cut.
“We’re sick of playing it, though it got us on the map,” Rooney says. “We’re gonna take a break. We might bring it back in five years.”
And there will be the expected sprinkling of “Unstoppable” cuts. Rooney says the goal on “Unstoppable” was to just be Rascal Flatts.
“We didn’t want to change anything,” he says. “We just try to find the right songs, and find songs with a broader emotional spectrum, but also the dumb-dumb radio-candy songs we know people want to hear.”
